What is Manuka Honey, and why is it great for your skin?

What is Manuka Honey, and why is it great for your skin?

It seems like there’s nothing that honey can’t do: it has antibacterial and antifungal properties; it can alleviate allergies, give you an energy and a memory boost; suppress a cough; and even help you sleep. It’s also sweet and delicious and, when stored properly, has an almost indefinite shelf life. It’s no wonder that honey is popular in the natural health and skin care industry

What makes Manuka Honey so special?

Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand by bees that feed on the manuka shrub. The manuka shrub is also known by its more common name: tea tree. The essential oil from the manuka shrub (tea tree) is widely known and used as a potent natural anti-fungal and antibacterial agent throughout the world.

All honey contains hydrogen peroxide, giving honey antibiotic properties. Honey also contains the antibacterial component methylglyoxal (MG). While all honey has small quantities of MG, manuka honey has a higher concentration of MG due to dihydroxyacetone – that is found in high concentration in the nectar of manuka flowers.

Skin Care Benefits of Manuka Honey

The benefits of Manuka honey for the skin are not limited to its antibiotic and antibacterial properties. In fact, many see manuka honey as a “miracle” ingredient when it comes to keeping skin clear, clean, smooth, and healthy. So, what can it do?

Clears blemishes

Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties are excellent for alleviating acne and clearing blemishes. Its potent anti-inflammatory properties also soothe red, irritated skin. It can help clear congested and/or inflamed skin.

Hydrates

Manuka honey, when applied to the skin, will help hold in moisture. It will also attract and absorb moisture from the air.

Repairs and rejuvenates

Manuka honey moisturizes without making skin oily, and without clogging pores. Its excellent moisturizing properties help keep skin looking plump and smooth. Manuka honey also help inhibit some of the enzymes that help break down skin’s collagen. It also promotes skin cell regeneration, and helps slough off dead skin cells – leading to a softer, more youthful complexion.

Mellisa B Naturally proudly harnesses the benefits of manuka honey in our Cleansing Milk, and our Moisturize and More.
